Background of the Study The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is a Nigerian government agency established to improve the quality of education in higher institutions by providing financial support for academic research, infrastructure development, and staff training. In federal universities, TETFund has become an essential source of funding, particularly in areas related to research, which is critical for advancing knowledge, improving educational standards, and fostering innovation. Bayero University in Kano, one of Nigeria’s foremost federal universities, has benefited significantly from TETFund’s support in promoting academic research.

Despite the significant role that TETFund plays in supporting research, the effectiveness and impact of its funding on academic outcomes require further investigation. The fund’s influence on research capacity building, publication of academic work, and the development of research infrastructure is essential for understanding its broader impact on the quality of education. This study aims to evaluate the role of TETFund in promoting academic research at Bayero University, Kano, examining the fund’s contributions to research productivity, infrastructure development, and the capacity of academic staff.

Statement of the Problem Bayero University, Kano, like many other federal universities, receives financial support from TETFund for academic research, but there are concerns regarding the efficient utilization of these funds and the actual impact on the university’s research outcomes. While TETFund has made significant contributions to research funding, questions remain about how effectively the funds are being allocated and whether they are translating into tangible improvements in research productivity and educational quality. This study will evaluate TETFund’s role in promoting academic research at Bayero University, Kano, and explore the factors that influence the effectiveness of the funding.

  3. Implementing effective strategies for TETFund utilization will enhance the promotion of academic research in federal universities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on Bayero University, Kano, and assess the role of TETFund in promoting academic research. The research will involve academic staff, research administrators, and TETFund officials. Limitations include the difficulty in assessing the full impact of TETFund’s financial support and potential bias in reporting research outcomes.
